Paper multiple-choice exams, from preparing them to their grades.
Need help? Write to contact@evalumina.app. We answer in English, Spanish or Portuguese.
Please do not send real students’ names, identifiers or answer sheets: if you need to show us something, send a screenshot with that information covered.
What you need
- A Mac with macOS 14 Sonoma or later, Apple silicon or Intel, or a PC with Windows 10 (version 2004) or Windows 11, x64 or ARM64.
- For EvaLumina Capture, an iPhone with iOS 26 or later.
- A printer, and a scanner or multifunction printer that saves pages as PDF, JPG or PNG.
Getting started
The quickest way to get to know the app is Home → Try the sample: in seconds it builds a complete exam with answer sheets already scanned, so you can see grading, grades and analysis without printing anything.
With a real exam (step by step in the guide, and how to write questions in Writing a question bank):
- Courses: create the course and paste or import its class list.
- Evaluations → New evaluation: in Prepare, choose the question bank and generate the booklets, the answer key and the answer sheet.
- Print and give the exam.
- Grading: choose the folder or PDF with the scanned sheets, and the answer key.
- Grades: review, sort and export the grades to a spreadsheet.
EvaLumina Capture for iPhone
EvaLumina Capture grades the answer sheets with the iPhone's camera, right in the room. It is free.
- To try it: on the list of evaluations, tap Try it with a printed sample and print the PDF. Each answer sheet already carries its form and the RUT of one of the sample's students: fill in only the answers and scan them.
- With a real exam: prepare it in EvaLumina for Mac or Windows and bring its answer key (the
.evlfile) and the class list to the phone, by AirDrop, iCloud Drive or any files app. A simple exam can also be made on the phone itself. - When scanning: lay the sheet on a flat surface and hold the phone parallel to it, with the four black squares in view. The sheet is taken on its own when the reading holds. In low light, tap Turn the light on, and keep the phone parallel: the light's glare can hide a mark.
- Sheets to review: when the reading leaves something undecided, the sheet is marked in amber. Open it to see its image and the question as it is on the paper, and confirm or correct what was read.
- The grades: the evaluation's share button offers Export the record, Share the grade sheet and Copy the grades, to paste into your institution's platform.
Frequently asked questions
How should students mark their answers?
By filling in the bubble, in pencil or pen. A cross or a dot inside the bubble is read too. A bubble that is only circled, not filled, reads as blank.
How do I scan the sheets?
With any scanner, in black and white or colour, as one multi-page PDF or as separate images in a folder. The app copes with slightly skewed sheets, faint photocopies and light marks.
What if the app cannot read a sheet with confidence?
It stops and shows you that page. You can type what the paper says, leave the sheet out, or review it once the batch is done.
I made a mistake in one of the exam’s questions
In Grades, use Correct a question: you can annul it, credit it to everyone, or change its correct alternative. Before applying, you see which grades change, and you can undo it afterwards. This is part of the free version too.
What does EvaLumina Pro include?
The free version grades evaluations of up to 35 students. Pro removes that limit and adds item analysis (difficulty, discrimination, reliability and distractors), bank calibration, quotas by topic and level, open-ended questions, per-question metadata and your institution’s logo on the sheets. It is one purchase, with no subscription.
I use a Mac and a Windows PC. Does Pro work on both?
Each store sells its own Pro. A purchase in the App Store works on every Mac with your Apple Account, and one in the Microsoft Store stays with your Microsoft account. Buying in one doesn’t unlock the other.
I changed computers or reinstalled the app. How do I get Pro back?
On the Mac, sign in with the same Apple ID and open Settings → See EvaLumina Pro → Restore purchase.
On Windows, sign in to the Microsoft Store with the same Microsoft account, then in the app press See EvaLumina Pro, at the bottom of the sidebar, and Restore purchase.
Where is my students’ information kept?
Only on your computer. EvaLumina has no accounts. On the Mac it has no internet access; on Windows, the only connection is Windows asking the Microsoft Store whether Pro is yours. See the privacy policy for details.
Can I use my own questions?
Yes. In Question banks you can write them in the app or import them from a text, Excel or CSV file, and export them to share with colleagues.
Which languages is the app in?
English, Spanish and Portuguese. It follows your computer’s language, and you can change it in Settings. On Windows it is under Settings → Appearance and language, and the new language applies when EvaLumina restarts.
